An Afternoon Visiting Ghent at Christmas

From the moment we arrived in the city, we felt that visiting Ghent during the Christmas season had something truly special. The streets of the historic center were already decorated with sparkling garlands, and the first scents of mulled wine drifted through the air. We began our walk near Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, impressed by the majestic silhouette of the building rising against the winter sky. Even in the middle of the afternoon, the light felt softer, as if the city were already preparing for the magic of the evening.

As we continued, we took the time to visit Ghent’s historic center, strolling without paying attention to the clock. The Flemish façades, with their stepped gables, looked like they had been pulled straight from an illustrated book. We stopped in front of the Belfry, proud and imposing, before heading to Saint Michael’s Bridge. From there, the view of Ghent’s three iconic towers — Saint Nicholas, the Belfry, and Saint Bavo — was spectacular, even under a slightly threatening sky.

The Graslei and Korenlei Quays in the Rain

As we walked down toward the Graslei and Korenlei quays, a light rain began to fall. Instead of spoiling our afternoon, it gave our visit to Ghent an almost cinematic atmosphere. The cobblestones started to shine, reflecting the lights from shop windows and Christmas decorations. We pulled out our phones and cameras, knowing we were capturing something unique.

Every photo seemed enhanced by that thin layer of water on the ground, catching the light like a mirror. Filming the illuminated façades of the Graslei, with their reflections dancing on the Lys River, made us feel like we were living a moment outside of time. We told ourselves that visiting Ghent in winter, even in the rain, had an incomparable charm. The city felt more intimate, more secret, as if it revealed itself only to those willing to brave a few drops.

The Castle of the Counts in Christmas Magic

We then headed toward the Castle of the Counts, one of the city’s most emblematic landmarks. Approaching this medieval fortress in the heart of winter felt like visiting Ghent in a fairy tale. The grey stone of the castle contrasted beautifully with the warm glow of the Christmas lights, and the light evening mist added to the mysterious atmosphere. We wandered around the site, taking time to admire every detail of the walls.

Even without going inside, simply walking around the castle under the Christmas lights became one of those moments that stay with you. We felt that our weekend in Ghent was taking on a historical dimension, as if we were stepping back in time. Once again, the rain played with reflections, turning puddles into tiny scenes where the ramparts and garlands shimmered.

Immersed in the Christmas Market

By late afternoon, we reached the Christmas market set up in the heart of the city. From the very first stalls, we were wrapped in a warm and festive atmosphere. Visiting Ghent at Christmas also means letting yourself be guided by the scents of local specialties, hot chocolate, waffles, and spiced mulled wine. We wandered between the wooden chalets, discovering artisans, decorations, and regional products in a lively yet never overwhelming ambiance.

We stopped at a few stands to taste some treats while watching locals and visitors enjoy the festive spirit. The mix of languages, laughter, and music made it feel like a big village gathered to celebrate winter. In those moments, we knew that visiting Ghent during the holiday season is a truly unique experience, far beyond a simple
