The largest canyon in France: the Verdon

Discovering the Gorges du Verdon
During our stay in the Var region, we finally explored the Gorges du Verdon, often described as the largest canyon in France, and sometimes even as one of the most impressive in Europe. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the sheer scale of the landscape: towering cliffs, raw nature, and an almost solemn silence. Walking along the heights gave us the feeling of witnessing something grand, a scenery you only see once in a lifetime.
Waters with an unbelievable colour
What impressed us the most was the colour of the water. It is simply unreal: a blend of turquoise, green, and milky blue that shifts with the light. Below, the Lake of Sainte-Croix, often presented as one of the largest lakes in France, creates a stunning contrast with the surrounding cliffs. We spent long moments just admiring these shades, almost hypnotised by this natural palette.
Exploring the canyon by boat
To fully enjoy the area, we decided to rent a small electric boat, a very common option here. Sailing through the gorges allowed us to feel their immensity in a completely different way. The water is so clear that you can sometimes see the bottom, and every turn reveals a new spectacular viewpoint. It’s an experience we recommend to anyone who wants to discover the Verdon from the inside, right at the foot of its cliffs.
A stop in the village of Bauduen
After this immersion in nature, we took the time to head down to the small village of Bauduen, nestled on the edge of the lake. Its narrow streets, stone houses, and peaceful atmosphere contrast beautifully with the grandeur of the gorges. We wandered without any particular goal, simply enjoying the calm of the place and the breathtaking view of the lake. It’s the perfect stop to extend the day and unwind.
A video to capture the atmosphere
To share this unique experience, we filmed a short video that we posted on Instagram. We are also adding it to this page so everyone can feel the atmosphere of the Gorges du Verdon, the colour of the water, the height of the cliffs, and the tranquillity of Bauduen as if you were there with us.
