Drøbak, our Norwegian escape

Categorized in Norway

Just outside Oslo, we rediscovered Drøbak, a small Norwegian gem that seems to exist outside of time. As soon as we arrived, the soft light on the wooden houses reminded us why we wanted to return. The gentle sound of boats against the quay, the salty air, the quiet that settles in the chest… everything made us slow down. We remembered our first visit, a day when we missed the ferry back to Oslo and ended up watching one of the most beautiful sunsets we had ever seen. Since then, Drøbak has felt like a refuge.

A village filled with history

Founded in the 16th century as a fishing village, Drøbak has kept its original charm. We wandered through its narrow streets lined with colourful houses, each one seeming to hold a piece of local life. Oscarborg Fortress, standing proudly on its island, remains one of the most striking places. Knowing it sank a German cruiser in 1940 adds a special depth to the visit. As we looked out over the fjord, we tried to imagine what life must have been like here during those tense and uncertain days.

A surprising sense of calm

But Drøbak is more than its history. We took the time to visit the small but endearing Aquarium, then the Christmas House, a symbol of its status as Norway’s official Santa Claus town. Even outside the holiday season, the place radiates a gentle warmth. As we walked through the streets, we noticed how locals took their time, chatting casually as if no one was in a hurry. Only forty minutes from Oslo, the contrast is striking. Here, everything feels slower, softer.

A place to breathe

Drøbak is the place we keep in mind for days when we need silence. A simple, sincere town where we can walk without a plan, listen to the fjord, and let our thoughts settle. We filmed a few moments of this escape and shared the video on Instagram. We’re adding it here as well, so everyone can soak in the atmosphere, as if walking with us through this peaceful village.
