View from Morne Rouge: facing Mount Pelée
From the village of Morne Rouge, Mount Pelée dominates the landscape with an almost magnetic presence. We began our exploration here, at one of the closest vantage points to the volcano.
Right in the center of the village, on the main square where the May 22, 1848 Memorial stands, you can access a viewpoint offering a beautiful panorama of the volcano.
The view is open and raw, allowing you to appreciate the distinctive shape of the summit, often wrapped in a light veil of mist. It’s from this area that we flew our drone to capture aerial footage of the volcano, revealing its ridges, contours and the vastness of its southern slope. The contrast between the peaceful village and the power of the volcano is striking.
Discovering Saint-Pierre: the town under the shadow of the volcano
We then headed to Saint-Pierre, an emblematic town located at the foot of Mount Pelée.
Here, the volcano is omnipresent. Even while walking through the streets, between historic ruins and colorful façades, it remains visible in the distance.
Its silhouette dominates the horizon, reminding us how deeply it shapes the identity of the town. Its height and massive form create a unique, almost theatrical backdrop that accompanies every step.
Flying over the sea: new perspectives on Saint-Pierre and the volcano
From the waterfront, we launched the drone a second time, this time above the water. The images we captured offer a completely different perspective: the town stretching along the coastline, the deep blue sea, and in the background Mount Pelée rising behind it.
These aerial views reveal the balance between nature, history and urban life, giving the whole scene an almost cinematic dimension. It was one of the highlights of our exploration.
Did you know there was a historic eruption in 1902? The eruption of Mount Pelée on May 8, 1902 is considered one of the deadliest of the 20th century, destroying almost the entire town of Saint-Pierre in just a few minutes. The pyroclastic flow, of exceptional violence, killed nearly 30,000 people and left a lasting mark on Martinique’s history.
Only a few people survived the 1902 eruption, including the famous prisoner Louis-Auguste Cyparis, miraculously spared thanks to the thick walls of his cell. This cell, still visible in Saint-Pierre, can be visited for free and powerfully recalls the scale of the disaster.
Practical information for discovering Mount Pelée
Access via Morne Rouge: ideal for observing the volcano up close and enjoying a clear viewpoint
Access via Saint-Pierre: perfect for combining historical visits with panoramic views of Mount Pelée
Weather: the summit is often covered, so a clear morning is preferable
Recommended duration: about half a day to fully enjoy both viewpoints
