Welcome to the enchanted world of cacti, where spines are in fashion and the sun always shines!
We absolutely loved this garden and highly recommend it
We truly fell in love with this garden, strolling through pathways lined with cacti of all shapes and sizes! Some truly impressed us with their strange silhouettes, while others stood out with their gigantic size!
But before you embark on this botanical adventure, let us tell you the fascinating story behind this extraordinary garden.
The creative genius of César Manrique
The story of the Cactus Garden dates back to the 1960s when visionary architect César Manrique returned to his native land of Lanzarote after traveling the world.
Inspired by the island's raw and wild beauty, César Manrique set out to create works that would showcase the unique nature of this place. And so, with his creative genius, he transformed an old volcanic sand quarry into what is now one of the most impressive gardens in the world.
Opened in 1990, this cactus garden is one of the most impressive in the world.
The Cactus Garden, opened in 1990, is much more than just a collection of prickly plants. It's a tribute to life in extreme conditions, to nature's ability to thrive where others might falter.
Over 7,000 specimens of cacti from all corners of the globe have found their home in this garden.
You don't need to be a botany enthusiast to appreciate this place, serene, restful, connected with nature, and even featuring a charming traditional bar with a panoramic view of the cactus garden.
Many varieties of cacti are represented
As you wander through the garden, you'll discover an astonishing diversity of cacti, ranging from small spherical balls (nicknamed Mother-in-Law's Cushions!) to towering Saguaros, the giants of the desert. Each plant seems to have its own personality.
Some cacti stand proudly towards the sky, while others lazily stretch across the arid ground.
Contributing to preserving César Manrique's legacy
By visiting the Cactus Garden, you're also contributing to preserving César Manrique's legacy and supporting biodiversity conservation efforts in the Canary Islands. So, the next time you find yourself on the sunny island of Lanzarote, be sure to make a stop at this hidden gem and let yourself be enchanted by the magic of cacti.
