Visiting the 9/11 Memorial

During our trip to New York, we decide to visit the 9/11 Memorial. We all know the images, the dates, the stories… but being there feels completely different. We arrive in front of the two reflecting pools where the towers once stood, and we stay quiet for a moment. The place is simple, silent, and everyone around us seems to be experiencing something personal. We realize that no matter how many documentaries we’ve seen, it only becomes real when we’re standing here.

The museum: understanding what happened

We then head to the museum next door. The atmosphere is heavy but very respectful. We walk slowly, reading, listening, watching. At one point, we stop in front of an object that hits us more than the rest: a small mobile phone recovered from the debris. We stay there for a few minutes, not really knowing what to say. It’s the kind of detail that reminds us that behind the historical event, there were lives, people, stories.
When we leave, we’re glad we came, even if it’s not a “fun” visit. It matters, that’s all.

A moment that stays with us

We posted a photo on Instagram on September 11, 2025, four years after our visit. Not to make noise, just to share what we felt. We even remember a small unexpected moment: we were trying to find the exit of the museum and ended up in a staff-only corridor. We turned around quickly, a bit embarrassed, but it made us smile on a day that doesn’t really call for jokes.
